Gerard Cano and Sergio Calvo, in the fight for the win

Gerard Cano and Sergio Calvo finished fifth and sixth in an edition of the Klasika Premundial of Beasain in which the fastest of a group of nine riders who regrouped in the last kilometres with Gerard and Sergio present, Markel Beloki (MMR), from Alava, won. It was an eventful edition, as the race was neutralised on the descent of Atagoiti due to the amount of fuel lost by a broken-down vehicle on the road along which the descent had to be tackled, which made it dangerous. The state of the road was so difficult that even in the neutralised march there were some falls, one of which involved Hugo Pradas (fortunately without consequences).

The race was restarted with 41 kilometres to go and four riders – Eñaut Otegui (Limousin), Eneko Egurrola (Alimco-Campagnolo), Lohann Vuillez (Iparralde) and Emilio Echavarria (Disgarsa) – were in the lead group at Atagoiti, riding with a minute and a half over a main bunch that began to break up on the first climb to Olaberria with Cano and Calvo very attentive. However, it would be on the third and final climb, which was reached with the race grouped together, where the definitive selection would take place, after an attack by Beloki (MMR) that was answered by his teammate Marco Martín (MMR) and both Gerard Cano and Sergio Calvo. The four of them opened the way until, in the final four kilometres, they were caught by another five riders.

Isaac Cantón, team manager in Beasain: “The team has been very good this Sunday, it has been competitive. I would have liked to have been present in the breakaway of nine riders that formed in the early stages, because in the end it is a movement that always allows you to anticipate others and always have a rider in the lead. But the guys were very involved in the race and when it turned upside down they were where they needed to be.
