Fancellu tries from the breakaway in Challenge de Mallorca
The Italian Alessandro Fancellu got into the breakaway of the Trofeo Ses Salines – Alcúdia, second race of the Challenge of Mallorca where the sprint victory went to Van den Berg (EF).
One more day, the double objective of EOLO KOMETA was in the search for prominence in the initial kilometres and the fight for the win in the final part. Fancellu was in charge of looking for the options from the distance, with a breakaway of four riders that reached 4 minutes of income. The rider fought the intermediate stages with the second place in the Felanitx sprint but without being able to take this classification.
After the breakaway was neutralised in the final part of the climb to Sa Batalla, the vertiginous descent to Pollença cut the group with the main peloton in which Samuele Rivi and Mattia Bais managed to hold on. The rain made its presence felt in the last 15 kilometres and complicated the sprint finish where the blues could not fight for a good position.
Sports director Jesús Hernández praised the work of his riders: “We wanted to fight for the mountains classification, but in the end Fancellu couldn’t hold on and was neutralised before the finishing kilometres of the climb. I think we have to highlight with his attitude, with the fight to get into the breakaway. We wanted to try with Maestri and David Martin to fight for the finish, but yesterday’s effort and the hardness of the day did not allow them to hold on. Both Bais and Rivi, not being fast, made it difficult for them to get a good result in the finish in Alcúdia”.
