Wind and crashes, protagonists in Hungary

The second day, long and flat, was expected to be calm in the main peloton with the breakaway under control and without any major problems. But with 40 kilometres to go, the action of the wind and a change of direction on the road unleashed hostilities. Attacks, sprints to improve the position, slipstream and the edge of the road as punishment for those who were not attentive. And so the group split off, with the EOLO Kometa further back than would have been desirable. Although the race rejoined in the final part, David Martin was affected in a hard fall with less than 1 kilometre to go and could not compete for the finish. But he is ready to keep fighting next three days.

Sean Yates: “We knew it was going to be a bit tricky because of the wind, flat terrain, crosswind, and teams that are very used to taking advantage of this kind of situation. We proved to be right, and although we couldn’t be in the front group, we managed the situation well, we got together again and we were in a position to fight for the finish. However, David’s crash when he was in a good position, on the wheel of the favourites, prevented him from sprinting. He’s in pain but at least it wasn’t too serious”.
