Vicente Hernaiz is still in the hunt for a victory he deserves: third at the finish line in Vioño

Vuelta Ciclista a Cantabria
Stage 2: Vioño – Vioño (135 km)

Vicente Hernaiz from Valladolid climbed to fifth place in the provisional general classification of the Vuelta a Cantabria after a second stage with a tricky finish, an ambush with steep slopes, vertiginous descents and narrow passes, also with crashes (like the one that affected Xabi Berasategi) in which a dozen riders were playing for the victory. Benjamín Prades won ahead of Vinicius Rangel and Hernaiz.

A final climb, the Salcedo cemetery, half a kilometre with slopes of 13%, dynamited the main bunch and killed the escape, the British rider Fergus Robinson (Eiser) and our Asturian rider Yago Segovia, who stood out with fifteen seconds after the last pass over the Alto de la Montaña and at times had the possibility of achieving success. Segovia (in the main catching combo) showed his great skills as a downhiller.

David Martín, involved in a very interesting breakaway between the penultimate and the last ascent to La Montaña, and Edu Pérez-Landaluce, also forming part of a group that faced the penultimate of the ascents, gave presence in the vanguard to an EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team U23 that ran very well during the whole day, with presence in many movements. Very active in the initial kilometres was in these tasks the Cantabrian Álvaro García and Vicente Hernaiz, who well supported by his companions recovered from a puncture in a complicated moment.

This Saturday the Cantabrian round concludes with its queen stage. The climbs of El Caracol (7.1 km at 6.8%) and La Braguía (8.4 km at 5.7%) will be fundamental for the offensive movements. The finish at the Cuevas del Monte Castillo, just under a kilometre and a half at an average of 6%, is enough terrain to break up the race with a view to resolving an overall that has a dozen riders equal on time.
