Two seconds off the lead before the time-trial climb to Vallter 2000
The climb to Vallter 2000 will decide. The 14-kilometre time trial between Setcases and the ski resort in the Girona Pyrenees, at an altitude of more than 2,100 metres, will define the identity of the overall winner of the Challenge Volta a Girona on Monday. This Sunday, in the Memorial Toni Fité in Sant Jaume de Llierca, the second of the three races that make up the Challenge, the breakaway won and all the contenders were marked.
In San Jaume won Ilya Savekin (PC Baix Ebre), the fastest in the trio that managed to amass in his offensive more than a minute over a chasing group where the leader Kazakov, our Sergio Calvo and other solid contenders such as Adriá Pericas or Gerard Ginabreda were riding. Further back, in a second group, Mario Gómez took a step forward in the general classification. Miguel Domínguez, due to a mechanical breakdown, could not keep his place in the top 10.
Calvo remains two seconds behind Kazakov. “We tried at the end with Sergio, pulling together. Personally I felt good, I had a good feeling and at the end I was able to hold on in the bunch. The pity was the bad luck with Miguel, otherwise the day would have been much better”, said Mario Gómez. “Now we have a very tough day ahead. We’ll have to see how it goes for everyone, we have to start at the top from the bottom, get into a rhythm and we’ll see how we do”.
