The ‘fuga de la fuga’ triumphs in an edition of the great Castilian classic in which Joan Martí Bennassar leads the way

74º Trofeo San José
Ricobayo – Muelas del Pan (155 km)

… And the breakaway triumphed. British rider Calum Johnston won alone in a Trofeo San José in which the victory went to the breakaway of the breakaway of the breakaway. At the finish the first rider of the Fundación Contador was Edu Pérez-Landaluce, winner of the last stage of Vuelta a Zamora, who finished eleventh. The Caja Rural rider attacked in the final kilometre and distanced Claudio Clavijo (Extremadura) and Diego Uriarte (Lizarte), two of the six riders with whom he faced the final kilometres and who had joined together after abandoning a large breakaway of sixteen riders. In the 2021 edition, the breakaway was in charge.

At the 42nd kilometre, the group was formed with representatives from twelve of the eighteen participating teams, a group in which understanding and collaboration soon emerged. The Balearic Joan Martí Bennassar, excellent rider, gave presence there to the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team. Calum Johnston and Pau Llaneras (Caja Rural), Evgeni Kazanov (Cortizo), Claudio Clavijo and Alberto Álvarez (Team Extremadura), Sergio Álvarez (Globalia), Nico Antorena (Froiz), Asier Azkarate and Íñigo Eizagirre (Eulen), Iñaki Murua (Laboral Kutxa), Diego Uriarte (Lizarte), Marcos Navarrete and Tom Finlay Martin (Netllar), Raúl González (Valverde Team) and Miguel Ángel Fernández (Rias Baixas) completed a breakaway that would achieve almost six minutes in their favour (km 100).

With the great breakaway riding with solid and substantial rents, for many kilometres Arnau Gilabert rode alone. The Barcelona rider of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation tried the option of trying to reach the head of the race in which kilometres later, after the second ascent to Muelas del Pan, in the subsequent terrain, began to be the scene of various attacks. In this decisive phase of the race, with the peloton riding at a high pace, trying to break down a gap that was not diminishing quickly, Joan Martí Bennassar, weighed down by an untimely mechanical breakdown, could not be more protagonist.
