Team Polti Kometa hits with Pietrobon the first breakaway of the 107th Giro d’Italia

Giro d'Italia (2.UWT)
Stage 1: Venaria Reale - Torino (140 km)

The event of the year, the Giro d’Italia, started today from the Reggia di Venaria and Team Polti Kometa was immediately in the spotlight with attempts to break away, managing to hit the mark with one of its standout escapees: Andrea Pietrobon, already prominent in the memorable San Remo a month and a half ago. The 25-year-old from Cadore spent 110 kilometers out in front, during which, along with five other breakaway companions, he was able to pay tribute to the legendary Grande Torino football team on the Superga hill before being absorbed on the Maddalena climb as a result of the UAE’s efforts.

While crossed the finish line in Turin ahead of Schachmann and Pogacar, the Polti Kometa riders gritted their teeth in various chasing groups to be ready for tomorrow’s second stage towards the Sanctuary of Oropa.

These were Pietrobon‘s words, making his debut in a grand tour, after the race: “Right from the start Maestri, the Bais brothers and I gave it a try, we knew it was difficult to join the breakaway today but fortunately, it formed quickly. I felt good and I’m happy… but not satisfied!”

And here’s the comment from sports director Stefano Zanatta: “We had planned to have a man up front and we succeeded with Andrea, who did an excellent job alongside experienced rivals including Calmejane. Well done to Piganzoli for holding up against the subsequent attacks and staying in the main group; we started the Giro with the spirit that distinguishes us and that’s what’s important.”
