Sergio Calvo is close to an exhibition in the last meeting of the Spanish Cup 2023
The Spanish Junior Cup came to its end with a blue print and the triumph of its last appointment. Sergio Calvo was close to a great exhibition this Sunday in a new edition of the Trofeo Ayuntamiento de Peñafiel in which the cyclist from Ourense went on the attack more than 40 kilometres from the finish, in the ascent to La Yesera. Riding at times at more than 45 km/h, Calvo was always able to keep the different movements behind him at a distance, but finally on the ascent to the castle, a few hundred metres from the finish, he was caught by several riders including the winner of the race, and the overall winner of the Cup: Pablo Lospitao from Extremadura. Miguel Domínguez finished fourth.
With six riders involved in the fight for the overall, none of them from the Contador Foundation structure, the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team riders had some margin when looking for the offensive. The original plans for the day were disrupted, however, by the neutralisation of the race for almost half an hour due to the transfers to hospital centres required by some riders after a fall. After the competitive return, with the usual succession of offensives and accelerations typical of the category, a new fall caused cuts in the main bunch. And from the leading group, Calvo’s movement on the climb. From there, an individual time trial in which Calvo showed off his power, but finally the last climb was very hard for him against a chasing group that was coming from the front.
