Piganzoli stays with the best in the Skoda Tour “queen stage” and ranks 7th overall
Team Polti Kometa remains in the overall top-10 at the Skoda Tour: after Mirco Maestri entered it yesterday, today in the queen stage Davide Piganzoli took over…
The 200 kilometers that cut across Luxembourg put the riders through a relentless series of ups-and-downs, causing the main peloton to break apart during the triple final circuit once the four breakaway riders were caught. As Vansevenant (Soudal) launched the decisive attack 25 km from the finish, the Polti Kometa riders stayed together for as long as possible and Davide Piganzoli held firmly with the leading chasers. Finishing 13th the climber from Valtellina is now 7th in the GC.
Piganzoli: “Since the course was challenging, we saved energy. An excellent Davide Bais kept us at the front during the circuit and, when we caught the breakaway, I also tried to counterattack. In the end I had to settle for resisting among the best and that’s fine, especially since I’m heading into the weekend with good legs.”
Sports Director Stefano Zanatta: “Our guys handled these 3600 meters of elevation gain very well. Early on we also tried to make a move with Mattia Bais but then we controlled the situation with the finale in mind, where Piga performed strongly and showed form and attitude. As expected Maestri dropped out of the top positions, but he should be able to regain some ground tomorrow in the ITT.”
