Mario Gómez triumphs in Molledo and leads a beautiful performance of the EOLO-KOMETA U19 team

Clásica Virgen del Camino
Molledo-Molledo (88,1 km)

Four riders from the Foundation’s youth squad, Iker Díaz, Miguel Domínguez, Mario Gómez and Iván Polo, took part this Sunday in one of the most traditional races in the Cantabrian calendar: the Clásica Virgen del Camino de Molledo. The eightieth edition, with the race always taking place within the framework of the patron saint’s festivities, was won by local rider Mario Gómez, with third place for Miguel Domínguez.

The almost 90 kilometres of the course featured three passes over the climb to Quevedo as the main toughest part, just over two kilometres at an average of around 5%, with some 11% gradients in the initial part. Gómez would end up winning the mountains classification, while Domínguez, third at the finish, climbed onto the podium as the winner of the flying goals. The EOLO-KOMETA team, with Iker and Iván arriving in the chasing group, took first place in the overall team classification.

Mario Gómez: “It was quite a tough edition because of the wind. There was a lot of wind in the area of Molledo and Arenas de Iguña. Already on the first climb, seven riders stood out, including Miguel and I. Thanks to Miguel, in a relay, I caught a small gap. Thanks to Miguel, in a relay, I got a small gap and I took advantage of it to continue alone, increasing the advantage as much as possible. The last part of the race was very hard for me, the headwind was strong and at that point I was a bit ‘toasted’, but I was able to keep part of the advantage and reach the finish line alone”.
