Mario Gómez and Iván Polo compete at the foot of the Angliru: seventh place for the cantabrian
The second edition of the Monte Llosorio youth cycling Trophy was the second front in which the team led by Gorka Beloki was present during this weekend. Iván Polo and Mario Gómez took part in the event organised by the Monte Llosorio Cycling Club. A demanding race with a finish in Viapará, at the foot of the Angliru, after passing through this same climb a few kilometres earlier. Five kilometres at an average of 8% and a long descent of almost ten kilometres.
Mario Gómez finished seventh on a day when Óscar Vian (MMR) won, a remarkable performance by the Cantabrian rider. “It was a really nice race and also very hard. On the climbs I felt very good, managing the suffering. With the descent we had been warned that it could be dangerous, especially because of the asphalt, and it was long, but the second climb came almost afterwards”.
Iván Polo: “The race was very hard, one of the hardest I’ve ridden so far. The pace was fast for the first few kilometres, then it slowed down a bit and then, once we got to the pass, everyone set their own pace. The descent was not very fast, as the road was in bad condition. And then the final climb was a real leg-buster. I’m leaving with a good feeling and having enjoyed the Angliru in competition, even if it was only halfway up”.
