Hayter shows off in a complicated prelude to Monday’s ‘tappone’ that EOLO-KOMETA manages to save with a good way

Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 2: Rossano Veneto – Pinzolo (168 km)

British rider Leo Hayter took the lead of the Giro U23 on Sunday after an attack in the last 25 kilometres that first caught the pair still leading the race, Petr Kelemen (Tudor) and Kyrylo Tsarenko (Gallina Ecotek Lucchini), to give new impetus to the movement and stand out alone in the last five kilometres. A day of very deceptive profile in which the five riders of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team arrived in the chasing peloton of Hayter, one minute behind.

Although the day was marked by the long breakaway of Kelemen and Tsarenko, a breakaway that reached seven minutes of advantage, until its consolidation there were also moments of some tension in the big group. A major crash that affected many riders took place within the first 28 kilometres and involved Fernando Tercero from La Mancha. The rider from Valdepeñas was quickly rescued by Fran Muñoz, who quickly brought him back into the peloton. From there, with the breakaway already underway, he managed the day and the first orographic difficulties of the race.

This Monday, the Giro U23 will face one of its two main stages. A long stage, over 182 kilometres, with a summit finish. Santa Caterina Valfurva is a relatively easy climb, but it will be preceded by a testimonial Campo Carlo Magno at the start, the long Passo del Tonale, Aprica and the hardest pass of this edition, the expected Passo di Guspessa, a neighbouring climb of the Mortirolo, to whose summit it is connected by a narrow mountain track that runs along this plateau. A queen stage not only for the Giro U23: for any professional race.
