Double commitment in the Madrid calendar for six riders of the U19 EOLO-KOMETA structure
Saturday 7 May: III Memorial Mariano Díaz
Sunday 8 May: VI Memorial Antonio Suárez
The Madrid towns of Villarejo de Salvanés and Corpa welcome this weekend two competitions in which the U19 category will have test, races in which there will be a representation of riders of the junior EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team. Races that remember two of the great cyclists that this sport has given at national level.
Alem Herráiz from Madrid, Iván Polo from Valladolid, Manuel Sanroma from La Mancha and Pedro García, Héctor García and César Pérez from Murcia will take part both on Saturday in the Memorial Mariano Díaz, a race that puts at stake the Madrid regional road title of the category, and on Sunday in the Memorial Antonio Suárez.
Mariano Díaz, whose memory has been honoured for some years now with an intense day of formative cycling academies, cadets and U19, was a professional rider between 1965 and 1971, a period in which he achieved, among many other successes, a stage victory in the Tour de France (1969, Divonne-les-Bains), two stage victories in the Vuelta a España (1967, Andorra la vella; 1969, Pamplona) and an overall victory in the Volta a Catalunya (1969). Díaz would also win a stage victory in the Tour of Switzerland in that magical 1969 and a few years earlier, in 1965, he had won the fifth edition of the Tour of the Porvenir.
Antonio Suárez, for his part, is remembered in Corpa with a race also for several categories that reaches its sixth edition in 2022. The Madrid-born rider, several times Spanish road champion, also has a great track record in which the overall of the 1959 Vuelta a España stands out. In the Spanish round he won five stages among its different participants and also climbed to the third step of the podium in the 1961 Giro d’Italia, an edition in which he won a stage (Cosenza).
