Davide Piganzoli gains one position in Andalo and is already tenth overall in the Giro Giovani

44ª Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 8: Aprica – Andalo (115,5 km)

From Lombardy to Trentino-Alto Adige, from the province of Sondrio to Trento, a journey with an intense start and a frenetic development in which the tension was palpable right from the initial neutralised section, with several crashes taking place at that stage. The Passo del Tonale, a long climb, awaited the riders from kilometre zero and there was a large breakaway, more than thirty riders, from which the winner of the penultimate fraction of the Giro U23 emerged. Riccardo Ciuccarelli took the win, alone, Juan Ayuso held on for another day at the head of the general classification and our Davide Piganzoli, twenty-fourth, arrived 25 seconds after the leader. Given the results, Piganzoli climbs up to tenth place overall.

“To be in the top ten in a race like this and in my first year in the category is really nice”, said David Piganzoli, now tenth, 8’26” behind Juan Ayuso. “It’s something that motivates me a lot for the last two days, especially this Friday’s stage, which will be very tough. Today’s stage, despite this jump in the classification, has left us with a bit of a bittersweet feeling, because the breakaway that was made was very large and we couldn’t be represented there. But this goes on and there is a very demanding stage with a high finish”.

This Friday, the penultimate stage of the Giro Giovani and the last stage with a high finish. The long climb to Nevegal, which will be climbed twice in the final part of the race, will be preceded, with its ascent in the first kilometres, by the top of the race Passo Valles (2,031 metres, 6.5 km at 7.1%).
