David Martín wins the last stage of the Volta a Castelló: “A triumph for the teammates”

Volta Castelló
Stage 4: Castellón – Castellón (135 km)

Great protagonist of the race during the first day, involved in a breakaway that came close to success and with a second final position in the sprint afterwards, the Andalusian David Martín certified his great moment of form with a victory in the last stage of the Volta a Castelló.

In a stage with the presence of the ascent to the Desierto de las Palmas in its last thirty kilometres, the rider from Seville was able to resist in the climb within a group of thirty riders where there were also Andrea Montoli and Arnau Gilabert to finish off with his top speed on the finish line of the Columbretes street. Montoli and Gilabert were essential to neutralise an attack by a French rider in the final kilometre.

Martín’s victory comes to sweeten the sorrows of a second stage in which a fall, a tremendous initial scare, took away the Cantabrian Álvaro García from the options to fight for the general classification. A prize for the constant presence in the race of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation through the breakaways. In the final overall, victory for Igor Arrieta from Navarre and, on behalf of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team, eighth place for Arnau Gilabert.

“I am really happy for this victory. For a fast man there is never a victory without the work of his teammates. It is an eternal gratitude. Without them, without their work, these successes are impossible. Today my ‘brother’ Montoli did a spectacular job in the last kilometre to close the gap of an attack. And before that, he and Arnau helped me a lot on the Desierto de las Palmas climb. I’m especially pleased with this victory because we rode a great race, but we had a lot of bad luck, especially with Álvaro’s crash, and this is the best way to put that good performance on the record. After the second place on the first day, I’ve been calmer these two stages, working for my team-mates, with a view to this final stage”, said David.
