Hungarian rider Balint Feldhoffer won the overall final of the Trnava Tour in the U19 category on the strength of his great performance on the first day. The Slovakian event, in which Balasz Pollner also took part, was held over two days on the line and brought together several categories at the same time.
On the first day, a 115-kilometre stage was scheduled, while the second day’s route was 125 kilometres long. In the first stage Feldhoffer practically sealed his victory in the general classification of the race after being the only junior rider who managed to hold on in a leading group with riders from other higher categories. In that first stage he finished twelfth and was four minutes ahead of Juraj Vrbik, winner on the second day and second overall.
“On the first day we had a very flat race. There were five laps of a 120-kilometre circuit and we were competing with the elite category. At the beginning of the third lap I got into a cut-off with no other junior riders. We worked very hard and managed to reach the finish line with a lead of about four minutes,” he recalls.
“The second race took place on a slightly more hilly terrain, also over five laps of the same course and again with the elite category in contention. The pace was very high throughout the day and no breakaway managed to consolidate. In the end there was a mass finish and I managed to hold on to the lead and win the overall”, he concludes.
