Alex Martín leads EOLO KOMETA in a spectacular Circuito de Getxo

Circuito de Getxo (1.1)
Bilbao-Getxo (193'3km)

The race that closed the weekend of competition in Spain did not disappoint, with many attacks from the first moments and with Álex Martín stayed on in the main group of favourites until the last lap, although they did not manage to dispute the race as the final winner came out from an early breakaway.

Good feelings to close the four days of competition of the EOLO KOMETA in Spain. The team went out really motivated to the hard course of the Circuito de Getxo, with movements from the very start looking for the breakaway. David Martín was very active there, who together with the rest of his teammates tried to be protagonists in the initial attemps.

However, the big names in the competition did not give way to any attacks. The breakaways followed one after the other and were all neutralised, while the speed of the race itself was selecting the peloton and eliminated some of the favourites such as Ayuso (UAE Emirates).

It was before the halfway point of the race when the decisive group in search of the victory of the Circuito de Getxo took off. EOLO KOMETA riders could not be in this cut, but Álex Martín perfectly followed all the movements behind that left only 7 riders in the chasing group, in the final two laps of the circuit that included the ascent of Pike Bidea

Attentive to the attacks, trying to manage the forces and also collaborating in a chase that at some point seemed to allow dreaming of neutralising the race leader group, Álex Martín was in the last climb to the finish line fighting for a top-10 he finally fell just short of. The Catalan rider, but based in Bilbao, was 12th in the victory of Lutsenko (Astana) and also put the final mark to the month of July before an August full of stage races.

Jesús Hernández, sports director: “We are happy, because we rode very well from the start. We kept an eye on the breakaways, and when the group broke up, Álex Martín was able to come back and chase the breakaway of the day, and in the end we were just outside the top-10. The commitment and performance of a young rider like him I think is the best way to be satisfied with the work done”.

Álex Martín: “The race was crazy at the start, very big groups went off but then they were caughted. From the back, I managed to get to a peloton of about 40 riders with the favourites and I could see that the winner was there. On each lap we were dropping riders, halfway through the race there were about 20 riders left and when Izagirre (Cofidis) attacked we were only 8 riders left in pursuit of the escapees. It was a group of very good people and I’m satisfied to have held on to compete in the sprint. I’m very happy with the feeling”.
