A breakaway with a great fight between steep and windy climbs

XXXV Vuelta a Madrid
Stage 2: Alcalá de Henares – Alcalá de Henares (137,5 km)

A breakaway of twelve riders, with double representation of EOLO-KOMETA, which was planted in the last 60 kilometres with about 4’30” of margin on the leader’s group was the great protagonist and the great cheerleader of a demanding day, of much wear and much more heat, which finally resulted in the solo victory of Josep Tomás (Brocar-Ale) and his rise to the provisional leadership. A very competitive and exciting stage from which Muñoz, fifth at the finish, comes out as fourth overall.

Andrea Montoli and Fran Muñoz were the representatives of the U23 team of the Contador Foundation in the numerous breakaway that, between steep slopes, windy sections and offensives, was selected as the kilometres went by. Héctor Rodas and Jaume Guardeño (Caja Rural), Kacper Krawiecz (Telco’m), Daniel Jiménez (Froiz), Josep Tomás (Brocar), Diego Uriarte (Finisher) and the French Vendée U riders Vadic, Marais, Rousset-Favier completed this movement. Muñoz was especially protagonist in the last kilometres, with a presence in the breaks and with an offensive move in the final 15 kilometres that was the prelude to Tomás’ breakaway.

This Thursday the Vuelta a Madrid faces a short but demanding stage in the Sierra Norte de Madrid. La Puebla, La Hiruela and Collado Campadales mark a route with start and finish in Buitrago del Lozoya in which Arnau Gilabert will not be able to take part. The rider from Barcelona was involved in a that forced him to abandon the race with a possible broken collarbone. Fran Muñoz, by his hand, about the second stage: “It was very hot. Today was a complicated day, with a breakaway from the start, which made the day even tougher. This Friday is a short day, but very demanding, and I’m looking forward to it”.
