Iván Polo wins the Gran Premio El Baruco, a great day for the junior squad

Iván Polo, second year junior, won this Sunday the sixth edition of the Gran Premio El Baruco de Igollo de Camargo, a very positive morning for the junior structure of the Fundación Contador with additional successes in the overall team and in the overall of the ‘metas volantes’ by Iker Díaz from Bilbao. Sergio Calvo is the leader of the Asturcantabro Trophy of this diptych of races in Cantabria.

Polo beat Marcos Freire and Tirso Bra at the finish line, a pair that had taken the lead on the last ramps of the ascent to the Alto de El Churi, which was crowned ten kilometres from the end, and which he caught up with near the finish line.

The day, which was very rainy, was marked by a breakaway, initially three riders, later four, including Iker Díaz (completed by Vian, MMR; Ortiz, Bathco; later García, Isidoro San Justo), which was never neutralised by the peloton. On the approach to El Churi this breakaway grew to eight units, triple presence of an EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team thanks to the arrival of Polo and local rider Mario Gómez.

Iván Polo, who achieved the second victory of the season for the junior structure: “The race has been very hard, the whole day raining, very fresh temperature. We have been working all day long. Iker went ahead in a breakaway. On the last short lap Mario and I pulled ahead and we grouped together in the lead. Freire and Bra went away, but with five to go I was able to catch them and I was able to hold on in a couple of accelerations they did. I have to thank the team for all their hard work, they have done an amazing job this weekend. This is one of my best races that I can remember”.
