Tour de l’Avenir
Stage 9: Bessans – Villaroger (133 km)
Davide Piganzoli finished this Sunday fifth overall at the Tour de l’Avenir 2022, an edition in which the final victory went to Belgian Cian Uijtdebroeks and in which Alessandro Fancellu, rider of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team, finished sixth in the final classification.
Precisely Fancellu went on the attack during this ninth and last final stage during the ascent to the Col de l’Iseran, the top of the race, a move to which the leader responded perfectly and that selected the group very much while ahead opened the race a breakaway in which the winner of the last fraction, the Italian Lorenzo Milesi, was part of.
On the long descent the leader’s group regrouped, with new elements arriving from behind. Among them was Fernando Tercero. Davide Piganzoli, who finished some 40 seconds behind the leader’s group, Tercero and Fancellu, the second best climber of this edition, could not finish. Piga’ started fourth in the general classification, but was able to finish in the top 5 and endorse a brilliant performance.
Piganzoli did not drop out of the top four positions in three of the four final stages of a race of increasing difficulty on his way to the finish (third in Oyonnax; second the next day in Saint-François-Longchamp; fourth this Saturday in La Toussuire), while Tercero improved as the days went by after his crashes in the first days and ended up in the top 20 and finished 18th.
“I am happy with this result because the level was very high, as we knew it would be, and my form was good”, said Piganzoli after climbing the podium together with Alessandro Fancellu, rider of the U23 structure of the Foundation and currently in the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team, and Lorenzo Milesi to crown the Italian team as the best team of this edition.
“The truth is that the start of the race was quite complicated with the crashes, both for me and for the whole team”, tells Fernando Tercero. “As the days went by I got better and better and even today I was able to finish in the group of favourites. I’m happy with the way these last two stages have gone”.
