What a win! Tommaso Bessega opens the account on the final stage in Zamora
In a sprint, the first victory of the course, so longed for and so often so longed for this season. Italian Tommaso Bessega imposed his top speed in the final stage of the Vuelta Ciclista a Zamora on Sunday, another frenetic day full of alternatives in which the cyclists rode at an average speed of 46 km/h. The Guatemalan Sergio Chumil (Cortizo) took his victory in a final general classification where Andrea Montoli, also very active in this last stage, finished sixth.
Bessega put the best end to the participation of EOLO-KOMETA in Zamora, at the same time that he made up for the bitterness of an initial stage in which he fought hard for the victory and could not finish it due to an untimely mechanical breakdown. His brother Gabriele, who crashed on Saturday during the queen stage, was key in closing some gaps in the final part, while Edoardo Alleva was Tommaso’s last support before the ‘volata’.
There was no shortage of offensives in the stage with the fight for the overall, and Andrea Montoli was always present. On the climb to Toro, in a small group of twelve riders that would later be selected, always with the Italian included. And in the last 25 kilometres, with Daniel Cavia (Gomur) testing it and Montoli on the wheel again. It was a few seconds ahead and at a very high dynamic pace. But if you don’t try, if you don’t try, you don’t know what the result will be. Cycling is also courage.
Tommaso Bessega, after his first victory in the category: “I’m very happy, my first victory in the category. It was a very hard-fought sprint, with many riders involved, and after the bad luck of the first day, this victory is also a small reward. I think we have been doing a very good job in the last races, with very good results, and it was time to get there. I want to thank my teammates for all their support and work during this stage in which it has been going very fast”.
Isaac Cantón, team manager of the Vuelta a Zamora: “Finally, what a joy! It is the best reward for the great race he has done every day. Everything costs a lot, cycling is not an easy sport, it is often thankless and in the end only one rider wins. It was not an easy year, with a lot of bad luck in the form of crashes, injuries and with several second and third places. This victory is worth a lot, because that finishing touch was missing. Personally I really enjoyed watching the guys compete today, you could see they were enjoying themselves and riding very well on this type of terrain. Montoli has been in all the important cuts of the day. As a team they did a great job, every day they knew what and how they had to do things without thinking beyond that stage of the day”.
