Vicente Hernaiz and Álex Martín save the day after being involved in a crash
44ª Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 3: Cesenatico – Cesenatico (132,5 km)
Saturday was a difficult day for the interests of the U23 team of the Contador Foundation. Vicente Hernaiz and Álex Martín were involved in a crash in the last 25 kilometres. Both managed to return to the discipline of the peloton, not without effort, and thus save a stage whose development followed the dynamics of previous days.
Another day of triumph for the breakaway. After several attempts, with Joan Martí Bennassar taking an active part in some of them during the first twenty kilometres, a group of nine riders was finally consolidated, which, in turn, maintained its own fight for the partial victory with a solo movement led by Andrea Mifsud.
Mifsud would be caught and finally the victory in a reduced sprint would go to Alessio Bonelli. The peloton would start to arrive 27 seconds later, crumbled by a new fall in which the leader Juan Ayuso was affected. Joan Martí Bennassar, after the efforts of these days, took the stage more calmly halfway through.
For Monday, the individual time trial. Vicente Hernaiz will start in ninth place overall, with Fernando Tercero in twenty-second place.
