Vicente Hernaiz abandons the Giro Giovani with a fracture in his right elbow
44ª Giro d´Italia U23
Stage 4: Sorbolo Mezzani – Guastalla (25,4 km CRI)
Vicente Hernaiz from Valladolid will not start this Sunday’s important time trial of the Giro d’Italia U23 as a result of the crash he suffered in the last kilometres of the third stage. Hernaiz underwent medical tests in the evening which confirmed that in addition to the heavy blow to his right side there was also a fracture in his elbow which needed to be put in plaster.
The Spaniard, who managed to finish the stage and made it back to the discipline of the peloton after recovering an important disadvantage, suffered a lot of pain and a strong inflammation in that area that presaged the worst. Hernaiz leaves the Corsa Rosa in ninth place in the provisional general classification and after a top-ten finish in the second stage.
“The crash was bad. In the end, the omens of what I could have come true. It’s impossible to continue in this condition and we still don’t know if he will have to undergo surgery for this injury. It’s a pity because he was in a great moment of form: I’m convinced that he could have done important things in this Giro”, says director Rafa Díaz Justo.
