Tough falls and a 10th place in Turkey
Presidential Tour of Turkey
Stage 2: Selcuk – Alacati (158km)
Wind and crashes. Those were the real actors of the second stage of the Tour of Turkey. The race faced a day with a simple profile, a spoiled breakaway and EOLO Kometa looking for their chances in the final part of the sprint.
But the wind brought the tension, the echelons, the lurches looking for the best position in the peloton and the crashes. One of the worst affected was Mirco Maestri, who suffered abrasions and wounds on the left side of his body but ended up in the main bunch showing his enormous courage.
The dangerous and very fast finish in Alacati, due to the favourable wind that the riders enjoyed and a speed close to 70 kilometres per hour, did not allow Giovanni Lonardi to finish higher than tenth place in the victory of Groves (BikeExchange).
Giovanni Lonardi: “Today was a stage where the wind was present throughout the day and caused a lot of crashes. At the end, I was a little bit behind in the last corner and I tried to sprint but I was too far away. In the next few days we will try to get a better sprint result”.
