Tommaso Bessega 4th in the last stage of the Vuelta a Zamora
The team arrived at the last stage of the Vuelta a Zamora with the intention of achieving a good result after being close to victory on the first three days. The breakaway resisted from being neutralized and the bunch came within three seconds of them. Tommaso Bessega sprinted to fourth place.
The stage started with a lone rider on the attack. During the first part of the stage he stood out, but the gap did not exceed thirty seconds and he was neutralized before the 50th kilometre. It was after the intermediate sprint at kilometer 70 that a breakaway formed with five riders 1’45” ahead of a main group in which the team was working for a possible sprint. Of the riders in the breakaway, only two remained in the lead.
The two escapees managed to bring their adventure to a successful conclusion and made good use of their advantage to reach the finish line with three seconds to take the victory. Tommaso Bessega was the best of the team at the finish line, sprinting to fourth place, second in the bunch. In the overall classification Dario Giuliano was the best placed in 12th position with Samuel Novak 15th. In addition, the fast Italian rider finished second in the points classification after a very solid week.
“The race was start and stop until the breakaway was allowed. With 40 kilometres to go we started working to control the race with Tommaso’s sprint in mind. Two riders remained in the lead, maintaining the gap. Nobody collaborated, but we knew the work we had to do. They did a good job, but without managing to fight for the victory, which leaves a bad taste in our mouth”, explained Miguel Gómez at the end of the stage.
