The sprint in Cesenatico places Piganzoli and Serrano in Memorial Pantani’s top-10
Sprint was expected, sprint took place in Cesenatico. Team Polti Kometa avoided joining breakaways in the Memorial Pantani and focused on working in the peloton, trying to reel in the various escapes that formed, ultimately securing a double top-10!
The first hour was raced at a crazy pace with 4 riders breaking away, but they were caught 80 km from the finish and a trio counterattacked. Then things shifted on the penultimate summit in Diolaguardia as three new riders attacked, eventually reducing to two on the last descent.
The Baroncini-Brenner duo nearly made it, but on the long final straight the main group caught them: while Hirschi (UAE) took the win, Davide Piganzoli finished 6th and Javier Serrano 9th marking a strong performance for Polti Kometa. Two riders of such different characteristics placing so well!
Piganzoli: “I had great sensations on the five climbs and in the finale we jostled for position very well, helping each other brilliantly.”
Serrano: “A nice result that rewards us for the hard work. I launched the sprint a bit too early, but it’s all experience for the next opportunities to fight for victory.”
Sporting Director Giovanni Ellena: “The guys did a fantastic job, each fulfilling their role. We could have done even better in the end, but Javi had some cramps. It’s definitely a great boost of confidence ahead of tomorrow’s Trofeo Matteotti, which we’ll approach with a different but equally prepared line-up.”
