The Kometa Cycling Team returns to Valtellina to claim the practice of sport in the National Park of Stelvio
Enjoy Stelvio National Park
Lago di Cancano and Passo dello Stelvio (30 and 31 August)
A large representation of the Kometa Cycling Team will go between 29 August and 4 September to the region of Valtellina to face a new concentration during which they will support two of the cycling events linked to the campaign Enjoy Stelvio National Park. Juan Camacho, Isaac Cantón, José Antonio García, Michele Gazzoli, Samuele Rubino, Diego Pablo Sevilla and Daniel Viegas, supported by the technical and mechanical body of the continental squad of the Alberto Contador Foundation, will accompany both Alberto Contador and Ivan Basso in two days of recreational nature in which the practice of sport will be valued within the framework of a territory of great environmental and landscape value.
During the 30th and 31st of August, all the fans who so wish will be able to climb two of the iconic ascents of the Valtellina, such as Lago di Cancano or Passo dello Stelvio. Both proposals, which give continuity to the climb to Mortirolo that was held at the beginning of last July, will start from the town of Bormio, small homeland of two of the main sponsors of the continental sports project of the Alberto Contador Foundation such as Kometa and Pedranzini. These are two events without competitive nature, free registration and in which it is mandatory the use of the helmet for the occasion will be the traffic of vehicles.
On August 30 will face the climb to Lake Cancano, a climb of great beauty and not lack of hardness, with a spectacular chain of horseshoe curves in its central part, a thrilling tunnel excavated in the route at the top and a final stretch without asphalt. The road will be closed to traffic between 08.30 and 12.30 in the morning. On the 31st, Passo dello Stelvio will be the destination of this initiative. Given its length and hardness, the climb to 2,758 metres of this alpine colossus will be cut off for motor vehicles between 08.00 and 16.00 hours.
“Valtellina has some of the best cycling routes in the world and getting back on the road is always a real pleasure. Its landscapes are incredible. And its climbs, impressive. This type of initiative allows us professional runners something that is not easy in competition: enjoying the environment, tasting the nearby landscapes with your eyes. And, of course, also interacting with amateurs, whether they are practitioners or not”, says Juan Camacho from La Mancha.
Initially it was also planned the presence of the team in the Contador Day set for Sunday September 1, an edition in which the Passo di Gavia was going to be the main protagonist again, but the great slide of rocks that affected the road to Ponte di Legno last spring, still unresolved, has prevented its celebration to the impossibility of keeping the route closed to traffic.
