The Cabedo arrives, a great test that has been fetish for the junior Kometa
VII Trofeo Víctor Cabedo
Onda and Segorbe, 9 and 10 March
The province of Castellón becomes again this coming weekend in the Mecca of junior state cycling with the first weekend of the Trophy Victor Cabedo, an emerging test of increasing renown, six editions already disputed, which comes to remember the rider from Castellón Euskaltel-Euskadi, who died in September 2012 after a tragic accident.
A peculiar event, which gathers four races during two different weekends and which for the structures of the Alberto Contador Foundation means a very special competition. Since its creation in 2013, there have been several partial successes (up to twelve, five of them in the traditional team time trial) and one of its riders has always won the final. Álex Martín (2018), Carlos García (2017), Tomeu Gelabert (2016), Guillem Cassú (2015), Fernando Barceló (2014) and Enric Mas (2013) have been proclaimed winners.
An event where the Foundation has historically always obtained great results and to which the Kometa Cycling Team directed by Guillermo Gutiérrez comes with the firm intention of prolonging them. Francesc Bennassar, Raúl García, Pablo Gutiérrez, Alejandro Luna, Carlos Rodríguez, Juan José Rosal, Javier Serrano and Fernando Tercero are the eight riders selected to compete for the first two trophies.
On Saturday, the Castillo de Onda Trophy will take place, a demanding race that takes place over 80 kilometers and that in its final stretch includes the ascent to Alto de Vistabella and will have its arrival next to the fortress that gives its name to this first competition of the Cabedo. For Sunday, more than 90 kilometers very complicated with start and finish in Segorbe, with a very broken terrain between medium and three high points, Matet, Torás and Teresa.
“I find myself with very good sensations, I have assimilated well the training done. I am looking forward to starting this season to see how I am with my rivals and try to get good results. I hope it will be the beginning of a season similar to the previous one, as I have worked hard to make it that way”, says the Andalusian Carlos Rodríguez. The Cantabrian Pablo Gutiérrez agrees with him: “I arrive very motivated and confident. I’m sure that my team-mates and I will do something great”.
The stages of the first weekend.
9 March: VIII Trofeo Castillo de Onda (80 km).
10 March: XXXI Entrada de Toros y Caballos de Segorbe (93.7 km).
