The Andalusian Sergio García, first signing of the Kometa Cycling Team for 2020
The Cadiz cyclist Sergio Garcia becomes the first new face of the Kometa Cycling Team for the next season, the third continental adventure campaign for the structure of the Alberto Contador Foundation led by Jesus Hernandez and Dario Andriotto. The rider from Alcalá del Valle, although born in Ronda (Málaga), promotes from the U23 team, where he has spent the last two seasons.
García, trained in the world of mountain biking, has stood out this season in a very demanding event such as the Giro de Italia under23. The Andalusian finished in 18th place in the final general classification, with very good performances in the mountain stages and showing a great regularity. During this season he has had the opportunity to put together very interesting performances in support of his team mates.
“It’s a very special day for me. Three years ago they gave me the news that I was inside the Alberto Contador Foundation and today the great news they give me is that next year I will run in the professional team”, says a happy Sergio García. “It is something that when you are small you see it distant and at the same time complicated, but with constancy and sacrifice I have been approaching little by little to something that I have always dreamed. Years of work and a lot of sacrifice have been left behind. And now, ahead of me, I have a career in which I intend to learn a lot, consolidate myself and become a professional of which my family, my friends, my colleagues and my team are proud. It’s something I’ve always dreamed of. I’m very grateful to Carlos Barredo and Rafa Díaz Justo, to all the coaching staff, to the U23 teammates and especially to Fran Contador, for always treating me with closeness and affection”.
“Sergio’s is a pleasant surprise. We are convinced that Carlos Barredo, physical trainer, and I are in front of a great long-distance runner. In the Giro Baby we could see him doing a great race in which he only had one bad day, and because of a breakdown that surely prevented him from being later in the general. We believe that in the professional field is going to walk more than in amateurs, where the typology of the races does not let you stand out as much as it should if you do not have a good top speed,” said Rafa Diaz Justo, director of the Kometa Cycling Team U23.
Garcia (June 11, 1999) is another cyclist who has passed through the Campus Selection ‘La Mafia se sienta a la mesa’ at Zaragoza. The Andalusian took part in 2015, when he was not among the chosen, and in 2016, the year in which he managed to enter the youth structure for 2017. The following season he made the jump to the U23 formation.
Félix García Casas, sports manager of the Foundation’s teams: “Sergio is a boy who comes from mountain biking and who has proven to have fantastic qualities for cycling. During his years in the Foundation’s teams, he has shown an enormous commitment with his work. In his two years in the U23 category he has not stopped taking steps that speak of his quality. Especially noteworthy this season has been his Giro Baby, where he was in front of the mountain. We have a lot of confidence in him and the projection he has”.
