Team Polti Kometa’s “Spanish August” ends in Getxo
After the Vuelta a Burgos concluded yesterday, Team Polti Kometa wraps up its week in northern Spain by heading to a land with a great cycling tradition: the Basque Country, for the centenary edition of the Getxo Circuit. The race has been slightly rescheduled due to the Olympics and, as usual, features a hilly profile: like last season, the two climbs of the Pike (75 and 18 km from the finish) will be the most challenging obstacles before the end on the Arkotxa wall in the Biscayan city.
Compared to Burgos, Polti Kometa will replace Double and Piganzoli with Javier Serrano and Fernando Tercero, who have already raced in the Getxo Circuit in the past, just like Alex Martín, Diego Sevilla, and Matteo Fabbro, while the Colombians Germán Gómez and Jhonatan Restrepo will be making their debut in this race. The 7-men squad, once again led by Jesús Hernández, will be aiming for a top-10 finish, something they have come close to achieving several times.
Martín, who finished 12th last year, said: “I know these places well as I’ve raced here several times with decent results. The trend is to start at a crazy pace right from the beginning, it’s not easy to stay at the front and avoid getting caught in delayed groups. Also, I’m always excited to race here because it’s like a second home for me and my family lives nearby. I’m motivated and focused on tomorrow.”
Sports director Hernández added: “Getxo is a unique race that, on paper, could be decided by a WorldTeam anticipating on the last Pike, an uphill that also featured in the 2023 Tour de France. There will be many high-level riders, but we know our value and we need to try to get into a breakaway and stay very alert at every stage to possibly surprise…”
