Team Polti Kometa “baptizes” the Giro d’Abruzzo with Peñalver’s third-place sprint
Team Polti Kometa showed up at the inaugural stage of the Giro d’Abruzzo to position Manuel Peñalver for the sprint in Pescara. And that’s exactly what they did. As the daily breakaway had gone, his teammates protected him perfectly (including David Martín, who had to get back in the peloton after a crash), and when it came to chasing down the seven escapees, Alex Martín led the charge along with other riders.
The last ten kilometers unfolded very quickly with even some attacks, but the teams interested in the sprint closed them down for example Paul Double on an attempt by Lutsenko. Well-guided in the last kilometer by Javier Serrano, Peñalver did well to hide behind the right wheel and secure the third podium of the season, after the two obtained at the Tour of Taiwan.
“Racing in Italy is always special for Polti Kometa and we really acted like a team,” said the sprinter from Torrevieja after the finish. “The victory didn’t come, but third place did, along with a clear sense of improvement. I thank the entire staff for their confidence in me.”
This was the comment from sports director Giovanni Ellena, working with Biagio Conte in the team car: “I’m very happy with this result in a stage with a lively finale; all the guys are working well, and so we’re going to achieve even better results!”
