Team building and fighting for the breakaway again
56th Tirreno Adriatico
Stage 6: Castelraimondo – Lido di Fermo (169 km)
… And the sun always rises in the end. In the face of Sunday’s storm, a spring day to face the last online stage of the Tirreno Adriatico. The last chance for adventure, the last chance for a sprint. Many interests at stake, frantic start, more than 50 kilometres covered in the first hour and 35 necessary for the formation of the breakaway. The EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team could not count on the presence of six riders in the breakaway, in a day where its existence was perfect until the end. This Monday the breakaway triumphed.
The EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team worked to keep the pace of the race alive, to hurry the chase options, to encourage other formations in this enterprise and to probe the possibility that another race could be lived in the steepness of the final circuit, with some spicy section. But the escapees managed to maintain a lead of two and a half minutes at a key moment and the teams with sprinters were not used to the full. The breakaway triumphed. And in the breakaway, Denmark’s Mads Wurtz Schmidt. The peloton was just over a minute behind and Vincenzo Albanese was involved in the finish to finish 18th.
John Archibald: “I’m very excited about tomorrow’s time trial because it has the right characteristics for me: it’s quite short and completely flat, where you can develop a lot of speed. We come from six days of very hard racing, it’s true that it’s the same for everyone but it’s certainly going to be hard. I’m very happy with my preparation, I know I can do a good result: I don’t know if it will be enough to get into the top ten or the top twenty. This is my first time trial in a WorldTour race: I hope not to make any mistakes and… full speed ahead!”.
The Tirreno Adriatico 2021 concludes on Tuesday with a completely flat 11.1 kilometre individual time trial. A time trial that has been eagerly awaited by Scotland’s John Archibald. A day to enjoy his performance in this speciality.
