Sergio Calvo debuts with a second place in Cantabria, while a fall frustrates the plan in La Canonja
Sensational debut of Sergio Calvo with the colours of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team. The rider from Ourense finished second this Saturday in a Memorial Chele del Campo Cantabria where Marcos Martín (MMR) won.
“We were close, we were close. But the guys did a great race as a team during the whole day”, says Isaac Cantón, director of this race. Calvo and Martín stood out in the last of the climbs to the Alto de El Churi, after Miguel Domínguez’s work in the final selection of the group.
“The finish was very hard, especially in the final part of the climb. The team worked sensationally throughout the day and I had the mission to move on El Churi. Miguel’s acceleration was fantastic. It was a pity not to be able to win to reward the effort of all the guys”, said Calvo.
In La Canonja, venue of the third round of the Spanish Junior Cup, Álvaro Martín finished twentieth in an edition of the Tarragona race in which the Russian Ylia Savekin won, who arrived at the last straight in the company of his compatriot and teammate Daniil Kazakov. Both, in turn, moved from a leading group of thirteen riders that consolidated after the mountainous area.
For the interests of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team, however, all the planning was ruined by a fall in which Gerard Cano, Manuel Sanroma and Iván Loaisa were involved. A fall that left out of play the Catalan and the rider from La Mancha just before the arrival of the decisive zone. Cano ended up with many abrasions and a fairly deep cut on one of his wrists which, according to the first medical assessment, was going to need stitches.
“It was a pity. The crash came on the approach to the first pass, very close to the start. We were in a very good position, with good legs and very focused on what we wanted to do as soon as the slopes came”, Loaisa points out.
