Second place for Gerard Cano in Bembibre, a day of fight at the end of the Trofeo Cabedo
Gerard Cano finished second this Sunday in an exciting edition of the Memorial Chely Álvarez de Bembibre in which the victory went to Markel Beloki (MMR Academy). Cano and Beloki moved on the last climb, San Pedro Castañero, from a group of seven riders that grouped together after the climb to Onamio.
Onamio was key in the selection. From there, a race that for many kilometres had in its vanguard a quintet of escapees in which Dani Díaz was present. Markel Beloki (MMR), Dani Tenorio (GSSport), Tomás Pombo (Cortizo) and from EOLO-KOMETA both Gerard Cano and Balint Feldhoffer stood out in Onamio. Then came from behind the Brazilian Andrey André and Sergio Romeo (MMR) to form the septet that faced San Pedro Castañero.
Gerard Cano: “It was a super hard day where the team started to pull from kilometre zero. On the twelve-kilometre climb almost everything broke and then Dani attacked to get away with a breakaway. On the flat section there was a fall that took me off the road, but luckily I didn’t fall and I was able to get to the hardest pass in one piece. Several riders went off there. Tenorio attacked first, then Beloki finished off and I reacted to that move to go with him. We rode together until the end, but after 500 metres he overtook me and went away. I had a good feeling on the climb and in general I felt pretty good, but above all it was due to the team’s hard work, which was impressive”.
In the Trofeo Julián Borràs de Càleig, debutant race in the menu of the Trofeo Víctor Cabedo and final appointment of this edition, the success of the breakaway was once again achieved in a vibrant semi-urban circuit that offered a multitude of movements. The victory went to Diego Aparicio (Valverde Team – Ricardo Fuentes), with Pablo Leno and Manuel Sanroma of the EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team in the main bunch that arrived 23 seconds behind the winner.
In the last corner, in a peloton of about fifty riders that was riding very fast, there was a fall that affected several riders and that disrupted the preparations of Leno and Sanroma to face that sprint.
“It was a bit of a crazy race, especially because there were several contenders for the final general classification in Cabedo and we went a bit against the clock. Pericas, one of the candidates, got into a very dangerous breakaway that brought down the leader’s team and in another subsequent move we had no presence. Balazs moved from the group and got into the breakaway, which was caught on the last lap. On the final lap, the two riders who took the victory went away”, explains director Isaac Cantón.
