Rainy breakaway for De Cassan in the GP Industria & Artigianato

GP Industria & Artigianato (1.PRO)
Larciano (piazza 4 Martiri - via Marconi) 168,8 km

The heavy rain that poured over Larciano and its surroundings forced the event organizers to shorten the GP Industria & Artigianato by one lap. The peloton caught the two remaining breakaway riders just before the last climb towards San Baronto, which would have been the second-to-last climb in the original route. In the sprint of the chasers behind the solo winner (Hirschi from UAE) Davide Piganzoli finished 15th and, right behind them, Matteo Fabbro finished 20th arriving in another small group.

The breakaway, initially composed of 13 riders, included Team Polti Kometa’s Davide De Cassan, who hadn’t raced since the end of July and today spent around 110 kilometers in the front: “It was planned that if an interesting attackers’ group formed, I would go for it” the 22-year-old from Lake Garda said after the race. “I’m happy I managed to do that. It would have been great to go even further, but that’s part of the game. I’ve shown that I’m in good shape, now I’m focused on recovering and looking forward to the next opportunities!”

Sports Director Giovanni Ellena commented: “Well done to De Cassan for getting into the right move, well done to the guys for climbing well. It’s a pity about Fernando Tercero’s puncture during the first of the two tricky descents to Lamporecchio, 30 kilometers from the end. On the final descent we didn’t want to take too many risks on the wet road, considering the numerous races we have ahead both in Italy and beyond.”
