Pablo García eighth in the second stage of the Circuito Montañés
The second stage of the Circuito Montañés started with Tommaso Bessega as leader of the race after the victory achieved in the previous day and a team with clear ideas. The team tried to control the race in favor of Pablo García who was eighth.
The main breakaway of the day was formed at kilometre six and for more than 100 kilometres the team tried to control its advantage, which quickly shot up to 3’30”. Tommaso Bessega in yellow with Archetti, Álex García and Bálint Feldhoffer, after the abandonment of Daniel Tenorio on the previous day, controlled the gap until the breakaway was completely neutralized. Once the bunch was compact, a new group of 5 riders attacked and once again the team had to set the pace in the group, with the help of other squads, to put down the attempt. With 25 kilometres to go Pablo Garcia launched an attack to try to break the unity. The strong pace that was generated in response to the attack made the bunch compact again.
With 18 kilometres to go, a new break was formed with three riders that García, with a new attack, managed to catch and reunite the group 10 kilometres from the finish line. One rider took advantage of an attack, go solo and finally win the stage and take the race lead. García was 15″ behind in the chasing group. The Spaniard finished the stage eighth, keeping his options in the fight for the overall classification.
“The premise was not to lose much space to the breakaway at the start. We had the idea of not pulling until once we entered the circuit, but because of the initiative of the riders and having good positioning, they worked. They rode very well and left Pablo in a good position on the last pass through Ubiarco. The race didn’t break completely and it was a fight between many teams that had two or three riders. We are playing day by day and that will lead us to achieve victories and a good position in the general classification. It’s an ambitious goal, but we have the team for it and they are very motivated”, explained Miguel Gómez, the team’s sports director in the race at the end of the stage.
