Pablo García close to the victory and back to the podium on the final stage of the Vuelta a Galicia

The fourth and final stage of the Volta a Galicia was a special day for the amateur team of the Alberto Contador Foundation and the team was able to prove it in a day where they fought for the victory. Pablo Garcia finished second and managed to regain the podium position lost in the previous stage.

The day began with a breakaway of four riders that, unlike the rest of the stages, formed easily. The bunch had the difference of the group around a minute and a minute and a half. As the stage progressed, a counter-attack group was formed that did not make it to the head of the race. On the approach to the most important point of the day, the top of Monte Castrove (2nd), the main group neutralized the intermediate group and left the breakaway very close from them. From the very first kilometer of the climb the pace was very high and Pablo Garcia managed to reach the wheel of the race leader after a great effort. At the end of the climb a small leading group of six riders formed with Pablo in the fight for the stage victory.

The six riders maintained the pace and the advantage over the main group. Despite several attacks and the group breaking up on several occasions, the six rode together onto the last three kilometers. A final attack by one rider came to fruition and achieved victory over the five breakaway companions in which Pablo García managed to sprint to second place. The rider from Madrid finished second in a stage that allowed him to climb to the podium as third overall in the race.

Rafael Díaz Justo: “We had a complicated situation after yesterday’s stage where we lost the lead. We didn’t lose it with a lot of time and today we wanted to dispute the stage and get on the podium. That’s what we did. In the climb we rode very fast and in the group of six Pablo was second and climbed to the podium and we finished happy. I am satisfied with the effort, the sacrifice and the desire that they have put in”.
