Opening day with many race alternatives, Alleva and Montoli in the breakaways, Camprubí attentive in El Churi and Domínguez eleventh at the end
Vuelta Ciclista a Cantabria
Stage 1: Maliaño – Maliaño (148,8 km)
Russian victory in Maliaño, finish of the first stage of the Tour of Cantabria in which the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation was very active through different race situations. Ilia Shchegolkov won, who led an acceleration with a kilometre and a half to go, and in the small chasing group came both David Domínguez, eleventh at the finish, and Marcel Camprubí. Shchegolkov is the first leader of a general classification with many riders only separated by a kilometre. Camprubí and Domínguez are in the lead.
The last climb to El Churi, as expected, was fundamental in the development of the race. On its slopes Caja Rural went on the attack and Marcel Camprubí was one of the riders who responded quickly. Nine riders reached the summit of the mountains, nine kilometres from the finish, but on the descent there was a regrouping that resulted in a group of about twenty-five riders. In the volata of the chasing group, Domínguez finished eleventh.
Before the final ascent to El Churi, a frenetic start to the race (an average of around 44 km/h) with many movements and all the teams looking for their share of representation, with the peloton splitting in two for a few kilometres, with a breakaway led by Edoardo Alleva and Diego Uriarte (Lizarte) and a subsequent movement of eight riders, including Andrea Montoli, who was selected on the first of the two passes through El Churi.
For this Friday, 135 kilometres starting and finishing in Vioño in which it will be necessary to manage the ascent to La Montaña on four occasions and, in the final two kilometres, the short but demanding slope of the Salcedo cemetery, which was already passed in the 2021 edition.
