Medal fight for a great Erik Fetter, fourth in the arrive, in the U23 road race at the Europeans in Trento
European Continental Championships U23
Trento – Trento (133,6 km)
EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team’s Hungarian rider Erik Fetter came close to the podium in the U23 road race at the European Continental Championships U23 in Trento on Saturday. Fetter, recent winner of the final stage of the Tour du Limousin, finished fourth. Gold went to Belgian Thibau Nys, silver to Filippo Baroncini and bronze to Juan Ayuso.
A creditable position, which highlights the good form of the Budapest rider. Against the strength of the three countries that climbed the podium, among the 18 countries represented by six riders each, Hungary started the race with the representation of Fetter and Adam Karl. The race was held over 133.2 kilometres, 10 laps of a selective circuit of 13.2 kilometres with the climb to Povo in the middle of it.
Fetter, very attentive to the evolutions of a race in which the teams of the favourites applied a great control, very active the selection of Spain in this aspect, was in the group of seven riders who played the triumph and that began to form, already in the final lap, after the attacks of Nys and Ayuso.
Erik Fetter, after his brilliant race: “We are very close to the medals. I had a very good feeling during the whole day, but it was also very hard. In the end it was a day of fighting against very strong teams with several riders. Towards the end I tried to be in front in the most nervous area, with a view to launching myself first, but in the last corner I was passed by several riders and I had to start a late sprint. In the end there was no podium, no champion’s jersey,… but I’m very happy with my performance”.
Fetter had also taken part in the time trial on Thursday, where he finished 21st, 1’49” behind Danish rider Johan Prize-Pejtersen. “At the start I had a good feeling, but as the kilometres went by I started to feel worse on the bike, I couldn’t go as fast as I wanted to and I even felt that I was not riding as well. It wasn’t a great time trial, but at that moment I told myself that Saturday had to be a different story”.
