Mattia Bais shines in Burgos

Vuelta a Burgos
1st stage: Villalba de Duero-Burgos

Trying, always. Believing in it, always. To dream, always. Every race, every time you stick a number on your back, every time you take to the streets: it’s a chance to win, to show off, to give and give yourself emotions. This, for us at EOLO KOMETA, is a rule. And the rule was respected in full, today, in the first stage of the Vuelta a Burgos: 161 km with arrival in the capital of Castile-Leon, on paper an affair reserved for sprinters.

And indeed, sprint it eventually was: Molano won, easily controlling the sprint by beating Garcia Cortina and Affini. But first, Mattia Bais’ star lit up the race with a daring escape: first with four companions, then alone until 12 km to go. A breakaway that started practically immediately, after the start in Villalba de Duero: together with Bais, Fuentes (Burgos BH), Etxeberria (Caja Rural), Berasategi (Euskaltel), Garcia (Electro Hiper Europa) sprinted. On the only climb of the day it was Berasategi who attacked but Bais on the descent went on the counterattack leaving alone. His courage was rewarded until 12 km from the finish when the group caught up with the Trentino rider to prepare for the sprint finish where the Colombian of UAE was the strongest. To be recorded, with 5 km to go, a crash involving Gavazzi and Jose Maria Martin: our captain restarted immediately, while Martin was forced to retire. Tomorrow, team time trial with the first climb. And we will be there.

Jesus Hernandez: “The team rode well, we have to remember that we are at a very high level race and teams that came here for the last test before going to the Vuelta to win it. Finding result is hard, we were great to catch the breakaway of the day with Mattia who was even better to try on his own earning the prize of the most combative rider. And a podium finish is always a good thing. We tried to sprint with him but it was not easy, however, we respected our attitude as a combative team that always tries to stay in front and show up.”

Mattia Bais: “I wanted to try. The team’s goal was to send a man in the breakaway, and in the end I managed to go: then, once I was in front, I tried to go off on my own even though I knew the sprinters’ teams wouldn’t leave me too much space. I’m happy, I put some effort into my legs and we’ll try again in the next few days.”
