Marcel Camprubí finishes second overall in a Vuelta a Madrid that ends prematurely due to a fire

Barcelona’s Marcel Camprubí finished second overall in a Vuelta a Madrid that ended abruptly on Sunday on the descent of the Alto de la Cruz Verde. A forest fire in the vicinity of the road stopped the race at that point and finally the panel of commissaires attending the race decreed its definitive end with a neutralised march, by an alternative route, to the vicinity of the finish line. Abel Balderstone (Caja Rural) won the general classification, while his team-mate Pablo García, who had escaped alone until the neutralisation, was named the winner of the final fraction.

A large breakaway, up to 47 riders, including for the second consecutive day the ‘blue’ riders Arnau Gilabert and Manuel Oioli, took the lead and went into the day’s mountain chain with a comfortable lead of more than three and a half minutes. With the slopes, a succession of attacks on the lead breakaway. A phase of the stage with constant alternatives and with a high pace in the peloton by the U23 team of the Foundation that allowed the advantage to be reduced with respect to the lead. Marcel Camprubí, in fact, went on the attack. From the ascent to the Alto de Robledondo, Pablo García (Caja Rural) came out alone with a lead of about two and a half minutes. In the leader’s group, Abel Baldestone launched an attack that was answered by Camprubí.

Marcel Camprubí: “It was a very nice lap and very hard fought until the end. The circumstances were very different from last year, when I won here in San Lorenzo. Abel, whom I congratulate, and I trained together sometimes and being in the fray during the race was a very fun experience for me personally”.
