Lucas Guillermo and Balazs Pollner ride in the great breakaway on the opening day in Balmaseda
27ª Bizkaiko Itzulia
Stage 1: Balmaseda – Gordexola (87 km)
Lucas Guillermo and Balazs Pollner were two of the main protagonists of the first stage of the Bizkaiko Iztulia. The Riojan and the Hungarian were part of a large breakaway of sixteen riders that formed after the first climb to Menagaray, a breakaway in which only EOLO-KOMETA, Zappi and Saxum had double representation and from which the winner and first leader of the race, Markel Beloki (MMR), emerged.
The breakaway took two minutes, a substantial lead that numerous movements in an increasingly reduced peloton tried to reduce. Beloki and Mikel Arrasate (Cafés Dromedario) jumped out of the breakaway, the ones who would go on to win the race, while Guillermo and Pollner dropped off on one of the steep climbs before the second pass through Menagaray. At the finish line, the Hungarian Balint Feldhoffer was the first of the boys in blue, 23rd at 2’06”; a little further back (25th) was Joel Díaz at 2’09”, in a group that also included Guillermo and Manuel Sanroma.
