Lonardi seventh in the sprint at ZLM Tour, with Bevilacqua and David Martin in the breakaway
A day of action and good results for EOLO KOMETA in ZLM Tour. The third stage was the scene of a day in which they were able to be present in the two breakaways and also in the final sprint. The negative note was the crashes of Mattia Bais and Samuele Rivi.
From the early stages of the day, Simone Bevilacqua fought to be in the breakaway of the day and was indeed able to filter into the group of six riders, and finally eight riders, who managed to open more than a minute and a half of advantage. But the wind played its part in the day, with the strength of the big riders neutralising the break and our Bevilacqua holding on with the new main group.
Calm returned to the group, the rest of the riders rejoined from behind and then David Martín tried his luck. A smaller group, in this case with three riders, managed to get away to accumulate 2 minutes gap. They couldn’t even dream of making it to the finish. But at least David won the bonus sprint at the finish, showing his great speed and character.
Neutralised too, only the final sprint remained and Giovanni Lonardi knew that this was his chance. Looking for a good position in the complicated last kilometre, he could get into the finish and be seventh to add an important top-10 in ZLM Tour for EOLO KOMETA.
Giovanni Lonardi: “At the end of the sprint we were in the group that escaped the crash just entering the last lap. I tried to find the best position before the last corner. I think I launched the sprint a bit far and I could have been even further ahead, but it’s a good result”.
Biagio Conte: “Today the guys had a very positive and active attitude. They rode well, being protagonists from the start. Bevilacqua was in the first breakaway, then with the wind the group broke up but they all came together again and David Martin led another breakaway, while in the sprint Lonardi took seventh place. It was a pity that Mattia Bais and Rivi crashed on the last lap. Let’s hope that it doesn’t limit them too much for the final day. But the balance is very positive. I’m satisfied”.
