Javi Serrano in the top fifteen in a fast-paced Piccolo Lombardia with Belgian victory

Javi Serrano from Madrid was very active in an edition of the Piccolo Giro di Lombardia in which the whole day was ridden at a very high pace and in which the final victory went to the Belgian Alec Segaert (Lotto U23) after beating in a tight sprint the world champion Yevgeniy Fedorov (Astana), the Frenchman Jordan Labrosse (AG2R) and the Ethiopian Welay Hagos Berhe (EF), with whom he got away in the last kilometre. Serrano, meanwhile, secured a place in the top fifteen of the day.

The Italian race was a dizzying one. 46 km/h in the first hour and half an hour slightly lower in the second hour show the evolution of a day where Davide Piganzoli tried to get into an early breakaway. It was a later move, however, that brought together many of the day’s protagonists.

A movement that at some point grew to forty units and in which Javi Serrano and Gabriele Raccagni rode.  That big group was selected on the climb to the Madonna del Ghisallo, with Serrano very attentive, but always Fedorov, Labrosse and Segaert were in charge of feeding constant skirmishes. Serrano finally finished fourteenth.

Javi Serrano: “I’m happy with the performance. It was a nice race, but it was also very, very hard, with a very strong pace. On the first climb I was able to open a gap to Fedorov, but just above Madonna del Ghisallo they caught us. On the last climb I lacked the strength to be with the best riders of the day. In any case, I was happy to be among the best in a race of this level. The last test of this magnificent season for the whole team”.
