Javi Serrano from Madrid finished an outstanding eleventh on Sunday in the Gent-Wevelgem, the first race of the UCI Nations Cup in which the rider of the U23 team of the Contador Foundation competed with a Spanish team in which his teammate Fran Muñoz was also present. The victory went to the British Sam Watson and the podium was completed by the Danish Sebastian Kolze Changizi and the Frenchman Valentin Retailleau.

A position that, however, does not go down well with the rider: “I was going very well. I got through the two passes of the Kemelberg in the top five and I got into a thousand cuts with the idea of not arriving with so many people at the end. In the end we were caught by a big group and in the sprint I did what I could. But I felt I had the legs to fight for something more. I’ll keep the sensations and the feeling of being with the best riders in the category when the race gets demanding. To finish eleventh in a race like this, with such a high level, is a nice result”.

Serrano was making his debut in the race and even in the Belgian calendar. “I only know these races from television. I don’t have much experience in them, but I’ve always liked them and I’ve admired the riders who excel here. I really like the Flemish classics. I felt great on the cobblestones. I hope to return one day to this kind of races, I think I can do well”.
Fran Muñoz finished 46th. “I’m very happy to have had my first international experience, an experience that I’ve really enjoyed and from which I’m taking home a great learning experience”.
