Germán Gómez in the breakaway and Piganzoli with the best in the queen stage of Vuelta a Burgos

Vuelta a Burgos (2.PRO)
Stage 3: Gumiel de Izán - Lagunas de Neila (138km)

Prolific day for Team Polti Kometa in the third stage of the Vuelta a Burgos, the most mountainous and with presence in the breakaway thanks to Germán Gómez, in the final ascent to Neila with a brave Davide Piganzoli, in the general classification with the Italian himself now in the top-10 and with Diego Sevilla who is virtual winner of KOM jersey.

The key day for the general classification aspirations was dominated by Team Polti Kometa from start to finish. In the first kilometres, a breakaway was formed with Germán Gómez together with Bol (Burgos BH), Vinokúrov (Astana) and Álex Díaz (Caja Rural). The approval of the peloton allowed them to reach a 6 and a half minute lead, but in the second part of the race the gap was reduced again.

On the ascent to Vilviestre, the main peloton accelerated the pace and on the first Rozavientos climb ramps, in the initial pass, the advance group was neutralised while the climbers of Polti Kometa remained in the peloton.

It was the second and final climb towards Neila that led to the selection of the main group, the attacks and showed a great level for Davide Piganzoli, holding on until the last 3 kilometres with the favourites. In the last ramps, he tried to maintain the leading positions and crossed the finish line on the edge of the top-10, while he moved up to 10th place overall in the Vuelta a Burgos. Paul Double came in a little further back, also maintaining the top-20 of the general classification. For his part, Diego Pablo Sevilla climbed again to the podium, maintaining the KOM jersey, as virtual winner of this classification.

Davide Piganzoli: “The final climb was very hard, because of the heat, the gradient and above all because of the high level of the rivals in this Vuelta a Burgos. But we worked very well as a team, entering in the best possible position and from then on I gave everything until the finish line”.

Jesús Hernández, sports director: “It’s a positive day for the team, we have confirmed the virtual victory of Diego Sevilla in the mountains classification, which means getting on the final podium in Vuelta a Burgos. As for Piga’s performance, I’m very happy with how he did on the final climb, with the best and now 10th overall. I’m hopeful that he’ll be able to consolidate his position in tomorrow’s time trial, so we’re confident that we can finish this race on a high note”.

This Thursday, Vuelta a Burgos faces the 18.5 kilometre individual time trial between Santa María del Campo and Pampliega. With a completely flat profile, it will be a day of specialists that will define the general classification of the race.
