Gerard Cano third after a long breakaway

Vuelta a Madrid
Etapa 3: Buitrago de Lozoya - Buitrago de Lozoya (102km)

The third stage of the Vuelta a Madrid welcomed the mountains after two totally different days. Gerard Cano was the protagonist in a demanding day where the team gave up the leader’s jersey after an exercise of impeccable resistance by Gabriele Raccagni 9th in the stage and in which Gerard Cano could get the third position.

The stage began with several attacks in search of the breakaway of the day in which Tommaso Bessega was able to be present. His attempt was neutralized after the increase of the pace in the bunch. The 102-kilometer stage did not give the riders a breath. On the first climb of the day, Puebla de la Sierra (1st) Gerard Cano together with a group of riders reached the head of the race and attacked to select this group.

A trio was formed at the head of the race that looked like it was going to be captured as it had a 25-second lead with half a stage to go. The bunch stopped behind and let the gap increase to 1’40”. From then on, the two groups were in close contact and although a counter-attacking group was formed with the strongest riders, they were unable to catch them.

Gerard Cano came third after being in the breakaway all day. Gabriele Raccagni was 9th in the stage with Gabriele Bessega 10th who now are placed 6th and 7th respectively on the general classification.

“Gerard and Dario were the best suited to the profile of the stage and by putting Gerard in the breakaway, we had great confidence in him. Behind in the group we kept the rest of the riders and we didn’t push thinking about the victory ahead. We are a winning team and we want to get results so we are a little bit disappointed , but we have been so close every day that many would have liked it. We expect more, but the performance of all of them has been good”, Miguel Gómez summed up another day in the Vuelta a Madrid.
