Gabriele Raccagni, a rider who is in his first year in the category, finished a sensational seventh place in the final ‘volata’ of the 105th edition of La Popolarissima di Treviso, held on Sunday on a 14.6 kilometre street circuit with twelve laps to complete.
The final sprint, however, was not confirmed as the most feasible resolution until the last 25 kilometres, when a large movement, 25 riders initially, was neutralised and rode in the lead for more than 40 kilometres. A group that included, on behalf of the U23 structure of the Contador Foundation, its cyclists Edoardo Alleva and Arnau Gilabert.
After the neutralisation, a new race began in which several teams, with an interest in a mass finish, imposed their strength. In this final phase of the race, both Marc Terrasa and Arnau Gilabert suffered a fall, although without consequences.
“We tried to get into the breakaways, as we don’t have a sprinting profile like other groups”, explains Gilabert. “We managed to catch a very good breakaway, both Alleva and myself, but in the end we were twenty-five riders, it’s a very large breakaway, and there comes a time when people stop working. Yes, initially we made a gap, but in the end many riders stopped pulling. It was a day where we went very, very fast, with a final average of almost 47 km/h. And at the end Racca did a remarkable sprint”.
“The guys are working very well and this race was a good example. It wasn’t the most suitable terrain for our characteristics as a squad, but we explored our options without any complexes, looking for the lead and working with determination. A great performance throughout the day and a very good final result that must be valued because the great sprinters of the category were here”, concludes sport director Dario Andriotto.
