Francesco Gavazzi, the best of EOLO-KOMETA Cycling Team on Diego Ulissi’s day
I Settimana Ciclistica Italiana – Sulle strade della Sardegna
Stage 4: Cagliari – Cagliari (168 km)
Today was tough, but really tough. We knew, we knew that the fourth stage of this Settimana Ciclistica Italiana would be complicated: and so it was. Wind, a lot of climbing (three GPM), a breakaway that was hard to catch and a lot of fighting ahead to bring home the general classification. And that’s where we want to start: from the end. Because it was expected that this stage would have changed the classification and instead nothing changed: Diego Ulissi, with the leader’s jersey on his shoulders, won today’s stage triumphing on the finish line in Cagliari in a sprint ahead of a group of 25 riders.
The day has been characterized by a breakaway of five athletes who never took more than 3’10” advantage, a breakaway that did not see any EOLO-KOMETA jersey among the protagonists. Yes, this time our team was not able to leave its mark on the stage with only Gavazzi able to arrive in the second group behind the best. “Tough day – said the rider from Valtellina – and it was not easy to stay with the first ones that went really very strong: I gritted my teeth to stay ahead, but – I repeat – it was not easy”.
Today the Sardinian race ends with the last stage: from Cagliari to Cagliari, 170 km. A sprint finish is expected, and we are waiting for our Pacioni.
