Fortunato, the season is off to a great start
Vuelta a Andalucía-Ruta del Sol (2.PRO)
Huesa-Chiclana de Segura (146’5km)
Lorenzo Fortunato was just one step away from his first win of the season on the last day of the Vuelta a Andalucía. The young rider of EOLO Kometa went all out and showed his enormous level against rivals like Kamna (Bora), today’s winner, or Covi (UAE).
The team was protagonist from the first moment with Diego Rosa and Diego Pablo Sevilla in a cut that allowed the cyclist from Madrid to consolidate his victory in the classification of the flying goals. With his presence on the podium assured, and with the race very hectic, his attempt was neutralized to give way to a group of almost 20 riders in which Lorenzo Fortunato and Mark Christian were very attentive to get into.
But it was not enough to save that first selection. The size of this attempt and the terrain meant that Fortunato went off together with Kamna and Covi. They made their way, and already in the vicinity of Chiclana de Segura, the final goal of the Vuelta a Andalucía, they played for the stage win. Fortunato lacked the hardness to finish the stage. But his second place is exciting and convincing. It’s going to be a great season.
Lorenzo Fortunato: “It was a hard start and once the first breakaway was neutralized, another cut was made and Mark and I were able to be in it. I felt strong, we worked together looking to compete in the stage and it helped me a lot. At the end when I was alone against Kamna and Covi I tried to anticipate and regulate but they were able to beat me. I’m satisfied with the second place and I think that now in the next Italian competitions I can do a great job“.
Ivan Basso: “We are riding organized, very well. We were able to be in the first breakaway, we also got into the second to fight for the victory. I think Fortunato rode like a leader, which is his role in EOLO Kometa. He also had the invaluable help of Mark. He came very close to winning and considering it was his first stage race I think it’s going to be a great spring in terms of results and confirms that we are working in the right direction to sign a great start to the season.”
